In the US, minors who get in trouble with the law often face a justice system that treats them like adults, and punishes them with long sentences in tough prisons.

After spending their teenage years behind bars, many have a hard time adjusting to life on the outside.

Minors are under 18. Hard time applies to those either 18 or old or those under-18 who are tried as adults because of the nature of their crime.
