Battle for Berlin's Cold War airport |
Battle for Berlin's Cold War airport
Berliners face an emotional vote over the future of Tempelhof airport - built by the Nazis before providing a lifeline in the Berlin airlift during the Soviet blockade. The airport is too small to cope with modern jets and despite being used by charter flights and business travellers, hasn't made a profit since 2006.
Berlin's government says the huge airport, which occupies a site roughly the size of New York's Central Park, is dangerous and noisy and wants to shut it later this year.
Berliners are due to vote in a non-binding referendum on Tempelhof's closure, and a woman who witnessed the airport's key role during the airlift is campaigning to save Tempelhof.
